Challenger brands are beating incumbents inside AI answers — and the ranking factors travel down-market
NP Digital's 68,000-answer fintech study finds AI platforms weighting content relevance and topical consistency over domain age, opening a real visibility lane for small businesses.
A 15-year-old digital lender is beating a century-old megabank inside the AI answer box, and the ranking factors that got it there are portable. NP Digital’s fintech visibility study, released September 14 from San Diego, parsed 68,334 AI-generated answers across 250 prompts, 10 subcategories, and five platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude Sonnet 4, and Google AI Overviews. SoFi outranked Bank of America on every metric that mattered.
The gap isn’t cosmetic. SoFi surfaced in nearly 50% of relevant prompts, averaged a first-mention position of 3.75 against Bank of America’s 6.07, and pulled a 64.6 overall visibility score good enough for second place in the index. Sentiment tilted the same way: 61.8% of SoFi’s mentions were positive, versus 46.8% for Bank of America. Only 2% of the 68,000 answers carried negative framing at all, which means the incumbents aren’t being punished so much as quietly passed over.
What’s doing the work is topical breadth. SoFi appeared across all 10 subcategories at a 4.2% prompt frequency, while PayPal, third overall on 14,294 raw mentions, and Klarna, which showed up in 91.8% of buy-now-pay-later answers, dominated their lanes. No lending or credit brand cleared 43.7% in its own subcategory. Consistency across topics beats depth in one.
Nikki Lam, VP of Earned Media at NP Digital, framed the density gap as a reason to value placement on Perplexity. Gemini named an average of 10 brands per response, Perplexity 6. There’s room in the slate.
The buy-side already senses it. In IAB’s survey of 211 U.S. brand and agency decision-makers, 44% cite adapting to AI-driven search as a top media investment challenge, 76% list optimizing content for AI answers as a growing focus, and 86% are changing, or expect to within 12 months, how they measure media performance. IAB raised its 2026 U.S. ad-spend growth forecast to 12.3%, up 2.8 points from its 9.5% January projection.
The strategic read: AI search hasn’t dismantled incumbency so much as detached it from age. That’s the opening.
